Privacy & Cookie Policy

Last updated 30 September 2026

This policy explains what personal data GolfHopper collects, why we collect it, and what rights you have. It is written to meet our obligations under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

1. Who we are

GolfHopper is the trading name of the operator of golfhopper.co.uk and is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can contact us about anything in this policy — including any request about your data — at info@golfhopper.co.uk.

2. The data we collect

  • Account details: your email address, username and display name. Passwords are stored only as a secure one-way hash and are never visible to us.
  • Golf activity: courses you mark as played, star ratings and reviews you leave, challenge and badge progress, what's in your bag, want-to-play bookmarks, golfers you follow, and the golf groups you join or create.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, device type and general usage information, collected to keep the site secure and working properly.

3. Why we use it, and our lawful basis

  • Performance of a contract: to create and run your account, record your rounds, calculate your badges, and provide profiles, leaderboards and group features.
  • Legitimate interests: to keep the platform secure, prevent spam and fraudulent ratings, compile community rankings such as the GolfHopper Top 25, and improve the site.
  • Consent: we may occasionally email registered golfers about GolfHopper product and feature updates. These emails are optional — you can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us, and opting out never affects your account.

4. What is public and what is private

GolfHopper is a community site, so some of what you do is visible to other golfers: your username and display name, your public profile, the courses you have played, the ratings and reviews you post, the badges you have earned, the golfers you follow, and your membership of public groups.

Your email address, your password, and your want-to-play list are private. We never sell your personal data, and we never share it with third parties for their own marketing.

5. Service providers

We use a small number of trusted providers to run the site: cloud hosting and database services that store your account and activity data, and an email service that sends sign-up confirmations and password resets. These providers process data on our instructions only, under contract, with appropriate safeguards for any transfers outside the UK.

We may also share anonymised, aggregated statistics — for example overall course rankings, community trends or counts of rounds played — with sponsors, advertisers and commercial partners. These statistics never include anything that identifies you individually: your name, email address and other personal details are never sold or shared with anyone for their own marketing.

6. Cookies and local storage

GolfHopper does not use advertising or tracking cookies, and does not run third-party analytics profiling. We only use strictly necessary browser storage, which does not require consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations:

  • A secure sign-in token so you stay logged in between visits.
  • A small preference that remembers if you dismissed the “Add to Home Screen” prompt.

You can clear these at any time through your browser settings, though clearing the sign-in token will log you out. If we ever introduce analytics or marketing cookies, we will ask for your consent first.

7. How long we keep your data

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your personal details. Ratings and reviews may be retained in anonymised form so that community course rankings remain accurate. Technical logs are kept for a short period for security purposes.

8. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Have inaccurate data corrected.
  • Ask us to delete your account and personal data.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Receive your data in a portable format.

To exercise any of these, email info@golfhopper.co.uk. We will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

9. Children

GolfHopper is intended for golfers aged 13 and over. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised, and significant changes will be highlighted on the site.
